CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

ONCE ETHAN AND Renata left, with Terror in tow, the weight of the day fell over me like a heavy blanket. My brain simply couldn’t process another iota of information, so I curled up on the couch to watch some mindless TV. I must’ve dozed off, because when the phone rang, the cooking competition I’d tuned into had given way to a couple flipping a house.

I read the screen but didn’t recognize the number. “Hello?” I said, expecting a robo voice warning me of the looming expiration of my car’s warranty.

Instead, it was a deep voice with a Swedish accent. “Ms. Cassidy? Zees is Lars Eggars. I manage Ze Ice Zone.”

“Yes, hello, Lars. Please, call me Callie.”

“Zank you, Callie. I vanted to share vith you some good news. I have located your camera.”

I squealed in delight. “Oh, Lars, that’s wonderful. Where was it?”

“She vas in ze stands, pushed far beneath a bleacher seat. I do not know cameras, but to my eye, she looks vell.”

“When can I pick it up?”

“Ve open for Early Skate at five-thirty is ze morning. I vill be here any time after that.”

I thanked him again. When we hung up, I sent Raul a text.

Lars found my camera. Want to go with me to pick it up tomorrow a.m.?

He responded right away. I’ll pick you up at seven-thirty. Don’t keep me waiting.
